5th class Dunbrody Ship

5th class made a special trip to visit The Dunbrody Ship with their teacher Ms Sinead Breen, which is literally on our doorstep here in New Ross. It showed how people travelled the long ardious journey to America when the Famine hit ireland and many people found they had no option but to emigrate. Our Guide for the day brought it home to them that it took as long as their summer holidays to travel across the water to find a new life for themselves - two whole months. Conditions on the ship were cramped and food was poor. Families were forced to sleep in a very small space and stay below deck. They were allowed one half hour a day above on deck. First class passengers, however could go on deck when they wished, though only two families could travel first class. It was a very interesting history trip for  the children who thoroughly enjoyed it.
